About the event

CONFERENCES

SERRANO_SERRANO.JPG

Manuel Serrano obtained his PhD in 1991, from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.  From 1991 to 1996, Serrano worked in the team of David Beach in Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY.  During this period, Serrano made his most important discovery with the identification and characterization of the gene p16, one of the most important genes for anti-cancer protection.  Serrano returned to Spain in 1997 to lead a research group, first at the National Center of Biotechnology (CNB), and then, from 2003 to 2017, at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO), both in Madrid.  In 2017, Serrano moved to the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), in Barcelona.

Manuel Serrano is internationally recognized in the field of tumor suppression.  In addition to the discovery of p16, one of his main discoveries has been the identification of cellular senescence as a main anti-oncogenic response. Recently, his laboratory has also shown that cellular senescence participates in several tissue remodeling processes during embryo development. The Serrano team was pioneer in the generation of genetically-modifed mice resistant to cancer and found a link between tumor suppressor genes and aging.

In recent years, the research interests of Manuel Serrano have extended to metabolism and cellular reprogramming in relation to aging.  The Serrano laboratory was first in demonstrating that cellular reprogramming into pluripotency is possible within an organism, and this discover was considered Advance of the Year 2013 by Nature Medicine. More recently, Serrano has reported in Science that in vivo reprogramming is enhanced by the coexistence of tissue injury thanks to the production of the interleukin IL-6.

The focus of his laboratory is now to apply their knowledge on senescence and reprogramming to degenerative diseases such as lung, kidney and heart fibrosis.

Fariñas is a member of the board of directors of various scientific societies and belongs to the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). She is part of the Botín-Banco Santander Foundation's science program. Currently, she is president of the Biosciences and Biotechnology area of the State Agency of Investigation.

WORKSHOPS

Scientists Dating Forum

scidf-logo.png

Scientists Dating Forum (SciDF) is a non-profit association formed by young international interdisciplinary members, including scientists, business people, lawyers, communications specialists, philosophers and economists.

The main goal of SciDF is to raise awareness of the importance of science and the scientific field at different levels. Despite science being essential in our everyday lives, it is considered an alien subject in the political and social contexts. We believe that the problem stems from the lack of action and promotion of science by scientists themselves, which in turn is a response to the detachment of politicians and society, generating a negative feedback loop. As we see it, normalising science and science understanding in the ecosystems where it should be present will have a positive impact on them.

Dra. Maria Luz Montesinos Gutiérrez.

(Sevilla, 1969) is a neuroscientist leader of a laboratory in the physiology department at the University of Seville studying the mechanisms underlying memory and learning. She is going to share with us how she managed to pursue and encompass her scientific career with the bipolar disorder that she developed when she was 16-18 years old.

Women in Science

In this workshop, we will have three researchers who will talk about the role of women in science with their personal experiences and all kinds of gender issues will be approached within the scientific field.

Oral Communication: different and innovative ways

pint-of-science-131377749682162327.jpg

Communicating science is an essential part to close it to people. In this workshop, we invite "Pint of Science festival" that offers interesting, fun and important talks about the scientific research. They want to offer a platform that allows people to discuss the research with the people who carry it out. It is a non-profit organization and it was created by a community of postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers in 2012. This association teaches us how to divulgate science in a different and entertaining way.

How to write a competitive curriculum and managment of social network

In this workshop, we learn about how to manage our social network to find a research project or job and what kind of curriculum is found by companies. We count with an expert in this sector and you could talk with him and ask him about your doubts.
