KEYNOTE LECTURES
Alfredo Corell
University of Valladolid, Valladolid, Spain
Alfredo Corell is an immunologist, university professor and scientific communicator, member of the Spanish Immunology Society, who was named Best University Teacher in Spain in 2018 at the II Educa Abanca Awards.
Corell is the coordinator of the Immunomedia teaching innovation project, a digital dissemination platform in which professors from six Spanish and two foreign universities participate. In addition, he became popular on social networks thanks to his didactic methods, which initiatives such as "Immunopills", small videos uploaded to Youtube, in which he graphically and easily explain aspects of immunology.
Salvador Aznar-Benitah
Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), Barcelona, Spain
Salvador Aznar-Benitah is the group leader of "Stem cells and Cancer" group at IRB Barcelona. Their global aim is to characterize the molecular pathways that regulate the behaviour of normal stem cells durins homeostasis, and how they become deregulated during carcinogenesis and ageing.
He is also the co-founder and scientific advisor of ONA Therapeutics, a biotech company, spin-off of ICREA and IRB, specialized in the discovery and development of therapeutic biologics targeting the lipid metabolism in order to treat advanced cancer.
ROUND TABLE
Science and society
The terms science and society usually go hand in hand; they should be ideally regarded, in fact, as an indissociable duo. However, we all know that the distance between scientists and the rest of the population has increased in the last years, maybe due to a progressive professionalization and access-restriction to scientific knowledge.
We’d like to analyse the current relationship between science and society and related questions, from the impact of fake news and pseudoscience to the potential role of initiatives based on open science and citizen science movements.
We’ll discuss these issues with ta group of experts from different scientific sectors:
Soledad Alcántara
Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), Barcelona, Spain
Soledad Alcántara, PhD., is the principal investigator of "Neuronal Development" group at IDIBELL and Associate Professor from the Department of Pathology and Experimental Therapeutics at University of Barcelona. Her research is focused on identifying risk factors and investigating their role in the central nervous system development.
Gemma Casadevall
NutraResearch and NutraProcés, Barcelona, Spain
Gemma Casadevall, PhD., is nowadays CEO at Nutraresearch and NutraProcés, overseeing all executive operations for both companies. With more than 25 years of experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry she has worked in the field leading large teams for projects with NCEs, Generics and Food Supplements.
Marta Pulido
Freelance author's editor, Barcelona, Spain
Marta Pulido, MD, PhD., is a freelance author's editor and professor of the "Scientific communication" subject in the Master of Biomedicine at the University of Barcelona. She has been qualified in Editing/Writing by the American Writers Association. She is member of Expert Committee of the jorunal Medicina Clinica and BJS Open, as well as, member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia, Royal European Academy of Doctors, and Royal Academy of Medicine of the Balearic Islands.
Clara Florensa
Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da tecnologia (CIUHCT), Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal
Clara Florensa, PhD., is a Historian of Science, Scientific Researcher at CIUHCT. She was trained as a biologist and as a physicist before entering the history of science field. Her research interests and publications are focused on the mutual construction of science and political regimes, ideology and religion, with a particular interest in the circulation of scientific discourses in the public sphere. She has studied the role of science in dictatorial regimes and recently started studying the mechanisms of construction of ignorance in the public sphere regarding nuclear risk.
WORKSHOPS
Speak out your science to the public
Eduscopi
Eduscopi was created by biologists, chemists, physicists and journalists enthusiastic about science and communication. They are passionate about scientific dissemination, research and the creatin of scientific content. Science should be understood by everyone.
In this workshop, we will work on skills for scientific communication and scientific dissemination.
Visualize your scientific data
Eduscopi
This workshop will focus on how to better present your scientific data using infographics and graphics, and how to make a great scientific poster.
Biodesign: innovation and entrepreneurship in life sciences
Biocat
Biocat is the institution that brings together the life sciences and healthcare innovation community in Catalonia.
The workshop will present Biodesign, a methodology developed by Standford University, which consists on detecting a clinical necessity and designing a solution and business model. It will be done in small groups and the main goal is to develop innovation and entrepreneurship in healthcare in a fun and didactic environment
Bad news - Understanding top-down and bottom-up scientific misinformation
Verificat
During this workshop, we will analyse examples and narratives of scientific disinformation, explore what we should (and what we shouldn't) do when counter-acting it, and see what actors and motivations lifes behind the spread of pseudoscience or bad scientific information.
